An open book examination: you will be able to complete this at home or in another safe and suitable location where you can concentrate. You will be presented with a scenario that describes a realistic workplace and situation. You will then be asked to carry out a series of tasks using evidence presented in the scenario as well as the underpinning knowledge you have gained through your studies and revision.

► You will have 24 hours to complete and submit your paper - though you should be able to complete it in 4-5 hours.

►  The time needed to complete the fire risk assessment is not restricted. We do, however, recommend that you take around three hours to complete all four parts of the assessment. We feel that the three hours will allow you to show your understanding of the assessment requirements and complete a good quality fire risk assessment.

Both assessments will be marked by an external examiner appointed by NEBOSH. These examiners are chosen for their experience and expertise to ensure that learners are assessed by the very best from our industry.

So here we check you have everything in place, provide some tips on how to prepare for taking a course remotely online via video conferencing. These tips will help especially help you with the open book exam.

Hardware: This is your computer and its functional features, like does it have a web cam and microphone? Do you have multiple screens or just one small laptop display? Is it capable of running the video conferencing software? Does it have the latest updates? It may be time to upgrade as home working and flexibility are probably going to be the watch words of the next few years.

Connectivity to the Internet: If you haven’t got good internet connectivity, you may need to upgrade your package. However, if you have a smart TV, Netflix or similar, then you most likely have what’s needed. One thing you do need to be careful about is other people using the internet and streaming or downloading when you’re on your course. Or even worse, taking your exam!

4 Day Block NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety FSC1 - The course is delivered online via zoom video conferencing, there is a maximum of 10 delegates per course. The learning materials are structured and delivered in a format to get you familiar to the 'new open book exam questions' style. These are shared digitally during the tutor led learning via zoom screen share and also made available via the RISK NEBOSH Personal Learning Zone at the end of each day.

How does the 4 day tutor led training course and Practical Fire Risk Assessment work?

This focused qualification helps you learn and develop fire safety skills which can be applied in workplaces anywhere in the world.

On completion of the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety you will have the knowledge and skills to:

Understand fire and explosion protection and prevention principles
Carry out an effective fire risk assessment in a low to medium risk workplace

3 days before your exam NEBOSH send a NEBOSH Fire Certificate FSC1 delegate login

This is sent directly to the learner from NEBOSH, which is why it's so important that we have the correct details on your registration form, including direct delegate contact details. RISK (nor any other training provider) has any influence over the accessibility or technical connectivity between the delegate and their NEBOSH login.  Which is why it is critical learners log on at the earliest opportunity and to familiarise themselves with the NEBOSH open book exam platform. We strongly recommend learners log in, change their password and familiarise themselves with the platform well before the day of the examination.

Your NEBOSH Fire Certificate FSC1 open book exam

This exam is the same for everyone in this cohort of delegates, the start time of the exam in the UK is 9.00am, for non UK delegates it's the comparable time in their country (i.e. the same 24 hours for all exam takers). All delegates have a 24 hour window to complete and submit their examination paper. Having a 24 hour window, gives you plenty of flexibility in fitting it in around other commitments i.e. work etc.

The open book examination (OBE) will be based on a realistic scenario, that will test both what you know and what you can do. You will be asked to carry out a series of tasks using evidence from the scenario and the underpinning knowledge gained through your studies and revision. You will have 24 hours to download, complete and submit your assessment.

Your assessment will be marked by an external examiner appointed by NEBOSH. These examiners are chosen for their experience and expertise to ensure that learners are assessed by the very best from our industry.

RISK get access to your submitted exam papers 3 days later

RISK access and download delegate exam submissions in preparation for closing interviews. All other delegates will have interviews scheduled over the next 10 days.

At this point the exam hasn't been marked by NEBOSH, the purpose of this interview is to assess the work has been completed by the delegate. The aim of this interview is to ensure that the work was completed by the delegate themselves and exam scripts have not been plagiarised.
A copy of the Closing Interview Guide will be provided to each of the delegates at the end of the NC1 taught course.

RISK conduct closing interviews

NEBOSH has a strict and rigorous approach to malpractice, plagiarism and collusion. This ensures fairness for all our learners and provides reassurance for the organisations who employ our qualification holders. You must not collude or share answers with other learners and all the work you submit must be solely your own.

Although the closing interviews are not assessed NEBOSH will not publish your results if you do not attend. The closing interview is a key part of their malpractice approach and includes multiple steps:

RISK are provided with a list of interview questions which are bespoke to the examination paper and designed to check you have the underpinning knowledge and understanding behind your answers. Learning Partners ask the questions in a random sequence so not every learner will be asked the same combination of questions; this prevents learners from predicting the interview questions or coaching others. RISK then complete a Closing Interview Record Sheet for every learner.

NEBOSH specifies that the interviewer must have a NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) or at least three years’ experience in the health and safety industry. Before the interview they will read your examination paper so they can ask more detailed questions if required.

During the interview you will be required to:

Show your identification to check you are who you say you are. This is the same as an invigilated examination.

Show the room you are in to make sure you are alone.

Answer questions about your examination. If you have not written the answers yourself it will be difficult to answer the questions.

To make sure the closing interviews are carried out correctly NEBOSH silently observes a targeted selection of interviews AND scrutinises Closing Interview Record Sheets. If your RISK interviewer or NEBOSH suspects malpractice at any time we will investigate further.

Submit your Practical Risk Assessment and Written Report

The final element of your NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety is to complete a Fire Risk Assessment and Written Report which is submitted directly to NEBOSH. The risk assessment component needs to be submitted 10 days after your open book exam - this needs to be returned to RISK, who submit to NEBOSH. The risk assessment demonstrates that you know how to apply everything you've learnt during the course. You will be assessed on your ability to apply your skills and knowledge to a wide range of issues and ability to deliver positive change to a real workplace.

What if I book with RISK and find the course cheaper somewhere else?

We have a money back guarantee, so if you find a more convenient location, timescale or better value provider after booking, then we'll give you a full refund before the course starts. (Must be 28 days before the course start date).

Let our Customer Support Team take away the hassle and do all the work for you - they will find you the most convenient course in the timescale you need to act.

Why Choose RISK for your NEBOSH Certificate Course

There are lots of organisations offering training courses, surprisingly not all are training providers. Some are simply marketing companies who make a percentage on selling you a course - known in the training industry as brokers. You may think what does this matter if I get my course a few quid cheaper - but if you've ever flown on a budget airline you will understand the price you pay directly correlates with the delivery you receive.

RISK are an award winning training business and not a broker, so what does this mean?

We have a long track record of delivering higher than national average pass rates because we provide innovative, engaging and well resourced training courses.

#2 - RISK offer the highest levels of personal learner support for the courses delivered. Our helpline can answer your questions first time, we guarantee the quality of the trainer, materials and venue. Including:

#3 - RISK provide the best value for money NEBOSH certificate courses. Depending on the course you're thinking of taking, there are numerous ways to reduce or hide the costs to make a sale. Often, you only find out what the true price is when you attend the first day. Only then you discover what isn't included that's extra, or realise the quality of the training provided and supporting resources are not as you'd imagined. RISK have no hidden costs, but call us and we'll tell you what questions to ask to make sure you don't get caught out if you're thinking of booking elsewhere.
